Goals:
To equip apprenticeship instructors with the skills and confidence to design, deliver, and manage online and hybrid courses in Canvas LMS, evolving the program from emergency remote teaching to a sustainable onboarding and reference resource.
Project Description
As online learning expanded post-pandemic, 60% of courses at the university moved partially or fully online. Student surveys revealed frustration with inconsistent design and navigation.
4From 2020–2025, as part of a team we designed the first and later led three iterations of Canvas onboarding and certification courses for apprenticeship program instructors.
First iteration (2020): A 6-week, fully online certification built during the pandemic to transition 60 instructors and Staff to Canvas and virtual instruction.
4Second iteration (2023): Redesign based on instructor feedback, focusing on microlearning, job aids, and 1-to-1 support. Reduced onboarding time from six weeks to two.
4Third iteration (2025): Developed an evergreen, modular course with ScribeHow guides, curated and created micro-videos, self-reflection activities, and summative assessment with a dynamic quiz bank. Functions both as a rapid onboarding path and a continually updated reference hub for instructors.
Impact
4Reduced onboarding time by 80%.
4Ongoing, support 60+ instructors and 60+ courses per semester, all published on time.
4Increased instructor confidence and autonomy with LMS tools.
4Created a sustainable, self-paced, update-friendly certification model that aligns with adult learning principles.
